When I enrolled at a local community college, I realized that I was probably going to be a lot older than your typical student was. The thing that I did not know that there is a technical name for the demographic group to which I belonged.
Definition of a non-traditional college student
From what I understand there are many different definitions of what the term nontraditional student means. The definition seems to depend on who is doing the defining and what their reasons for making a definition are. I’ll cut to the chase and add my definition to the mix.
The majority of the students that attend in colleges and universities around the world are in their later teens and twenties. Most of them have entered into these colleges immediately after high school. These students are known as traditional students by many institutions of higher learning.
That would make anyone that does not fit the age group as described above as being a non traditional student. Anyone of us that are not in that particular age group would therefore be nontraditional students. Students that are older would of course fit, but let’s not leave out the occasional student that is younger than that group.
Let me add a couple of more thoughts to this discussion. The majority of the students that are in attendance in colleges and universities around the globe do so in person. They are physically present in a classroom while receiving their instruction on various topics.
Now as many people know there is a growing trend in distance learning by students of all ages. Most of these students attend classes online. These students are, by my definition, also considered as being non traditional students because they do not attend classes in the traditional ways.
To sum it all up my definition of a non-traditional college student would include any student that is younger, older than the typical age range mentioned above, and attends college in an online environment.
Loans, scholarships, grants, for nontraditional students
Many of the students that don’t fit the definition of a typical college student still need some financial assistance in order to afford going to college. There are programs that are made available to every student regardless of whether they are of the traditional persuasion or not. The federal student loan program is one of these.
There are also scholarships, grants, and loans available for many individuals within the nontraditional student group. Some of these programs have deadlines for applications, so students should check with their school for information on any of these programs.
The main point here is there are many opportunities for every student that needs money to go to college to get the needed funds.
