Many people, me included, have wondered about just how difficult it is to take online college courses. Some have great concerns about not having enough computer know how to be able to function in an online school type of setting. Let me set the records straight about these things.

Is Online School Hard?

I have had that same exact question asked by students that are fresh out of high school and from people that haven’t seen the inside of a classroom for years. This question seems to be a big concern for those that are even considering this option for learning. I could simply state that online school is not very difficult at all. However, I will expand on the answer just a little in order to clarify things somewhat.

All of us have been acclimatized to attending school in the more traditional ways. Things such as going to an actual classroom, sitting at a desk or in a chair, and looking the instructor directly in the eyes are the methods within our comfort zones. You could simply raise your hand if you had a question and the teacher would give you an answer.  Sure computers are now part of the equipment in many classrooms, but there is usually an actual teacher in the room. It is no wonder that some folks are wondering about the difficulty of online education.

In many ways, online classes work just the same as those that are held within a classroom. There are instructors, fellow classmates, assignments, tests, discussion areas, places to ask questions, and many other things that are exactly like the more traditional schooling methods. These similarities make this type of learning no more difficult than the old school way we are all familiar with doing.

Community College Hard

Community college is not difficult for many of the reasons I have stated above. Additionally, they are designed as what is known as two year degree program providers.

Generally, a student can get an associate’s degree in about two years’ time, if they choose to do so. However many do not go at the classwork in this fashion and take a few online college courses for credits at a time. This helps those students that do not have the time to commit to the course schedule of a full time student.

You can consider these institutions as providing the courses needed in the first two years of many four-year degree programs. They teach the basics of your chosen degree path. I am not saying that you can breeze right through these courses. In fact, you will find many of them challenging.

I began taking classes online from a community college. I was concerned that I did not have the computer smarts to take the class. I also wonder if I was, smart enough in general to pass any of the classes they offered. After a very short while, I discovered that I did not need to worry about either item. On the computer skills side all you need to know are the basics. On the general smarts, issue no worries again. To put it in simple terms just pay attention, complete the assignments as instructed, do the best that you can, and all will be fine.

Online College Courses Hard

Before the very first online college course I took began, I spent a lot of time worrying about how hard this thing was going to be. Much to my surprise, courses from online colleges are not hard at all.

The classes I have been enrolled in do require each of the students to stay focused on the topics at hand. Pay attention to what you need to do each week. Participate as required. Read every chapter of the course textbook according to the schedule you are given. It does not hurt to read ahead if you desire, but at least keep up with the chapters that are required for each week. Taking notes as I read has helped me to not only get a better understanding of the subjects, but helps a great deal during tests, if notes are allowed in the tests that you take.

One of the more important things to remember when taking any online course is to read each weeks assignment very carefully. Make sure you understand all of the requirements for completing each assignment successfully. There are always a few of my fellow online classmates, in every class, that fail to read the instructions that are provided for every assignment.  Understandably, if you do not follow directions you will more than likely not get a decent grade for the particular assignment.

Any college course can be difficult. How the courses are presented makes little difference in the degree of difficulty. There are certain subjects that each of us may find to be more difficult to understand. These are the kind of subjects that we really have to work on simply to get a passing grade. So, sure these particular courses could be considered as being hard by some, but not impossible to conquer. Just because there might be, a course here and there that seems to give us a problem does not justify saying the entire long distance learning process is flawed.

Remember that most instructors that teach online college courses do so because they enjoy doing it. They want the students to learn about the subjects that they teach. They want you to succeed in their classes. Therefor they can be counted on to give you help when you have questions. Other students in the virtual classroom are also great sources for help when needed. Be sure to utilize either one if the need arises.

Every time I am asked the question, “Are online college classes hard?” I am forced to give my standard answer. No, they are not! Give them a try. I am sure that you will be amazed at how easy and beneficial this method of learning is.
