What a wonderful time in which we now live. Most of us are blessed with many modern conveniences that we use on a daily basis. Many of these items were only ideas just a few short years ago. As we, all know computers have opened up the entire world for everyone that has an internet connection. All aspects of our world have taken advantage of this fact. The educational departments of the world are no exceptions. In fact, they have embraced this technology as much or even more than anyone has.
The Difference between Distance Education and Correspondence Education
Long distance learning courses have been around for a long time in one form or another. Years ago, it was common for people who had a desire to learn a skill or make improvements in their lives to take correspondence courses. Back in the day, these courses were advertised in magazines, newspapers, and I can even remember them on matchbook covers. They may still be advertised in these ways I have not paid close attention lately.
Correspondence education is a form of distance education and is at times utilized in long distance training programs at the college level. The main features of this type of training are the learning supplies such as printed materials, videos, and the like are sent to individuals. The students then review the material, complete any assignments, and the send them in for grading. I have had a few college courses that were setup in just this fashion. They are actually a great way to learn. Many of them can be done truly as quickly as you are comfortable with doing them. However, in order to be successful with this type of instruction you need to be independent and distance learning motivated! You will be working on your own in this type of training.
When talking of distance education, we usually are referring to distance learning online instruction. This online distance type of instruction is beyond any doubt, my favorite method for learning. Taking courses in an online setting is often more of a structured form of learning than correspondence type instruction. In many ways it is like taking a class in the tradition way. There are virtual classrooms where students find assignment, tests, additional information, and participate in group discussions. These group discussions add to the overall learning experience. However, each student is responsible for their own work. Being a motivated and self-starter type of person helps in this type of learning also.
Long Distance Education
There are multitudes of these types of programs that are made available those who have the desire to learn. As an example, a few years ago I spent some time online searching for distance learning information. I really did not have an idea of what all this form of instruction would entail, but I knew I wanted to get started before I got any older.
As I searched for information, I discovered that long distance learning colleges were available, in what almost seemed to be, everywhere. In addition to those institutions that exist only in an online environment, most traditional types of schools provide online courses. They also offer students the opportunity to earn a distance learning degree online.
Fortunately, for me there was a Community College located within fifty miles of my home. This school is where I got a tremendous amount of distance learning information. In fact, this is the school where I began taking online classes. I would like to add that since we are discussing long distance learning, distance to the school of your choice is not a factor. I was also in contact with other colleges across the entire country and simply selected this one.
I was initially concerned about my computing skills. Such as, did I really know enough about computers to be able to take classes online? My worries were unfounded. Trust me, if I can learn this way, so can anyone else. Most actions you will need to take in your beginning course work are simple and can be learned fairly quickly if need be. If you feel you need additional instruction in certain areas, there are specific classes for such training. Additionally, as you progress through the learning process several classes will, as part of their regular curriculum, teach you many computing skills that are needed to succeed. Distance online learning is for everyone that has the desire to learn.
Long Distance Degrees
When I began taking classes online, I thought that I would simply be taking a couple of business administration courses just to see if I had the ability to soak in the information that was provided. Well, I found out that I could soak it up and I believe that almost anyone can learn in this manner.
I did well enough with the first few classes that I decided to take the route to a bachelor degree, (considered as a four year degree), by using distance learning as the method. The school that I was attending at that time offered associates degrees, (considered as a two year degree); in the major, I was interested. In fact, they, and most other schools, offered these associates degrees in many other majors. However, as I said I wanted to earn a bachelor degree online, so I transferred to a University located nearby my hometown. Once again, distance to the school of your choice is not a factor. In many online classes I have taken, there are students from all over the entire country. This shows that the distance learning online degree was not only the right choice for me, but the right choice for many other students as well.
Like my former Community College, this University, and I assume most others, offers a host of degrees that can be earned long distance. I was truly amazed at all of the different degrees distance learning students are able to earn with this method. Degrees ranging from Anthropology to Zoology and everything in between are available for the distance studies minded students.
I have read about folks that have the ridiculous notion that any types of degrees that are earned in an online setting are not as valuable as those earned in a traditional fashion. They are of course, wrong. However, I believe that some care should be taken when choosing where to get your long distance education. There are some places that only want to take your money and offer little in return. Check to be sure that the online learning degree you think you will get is actually a degree that is recognized by the rest of the world. If you earn a degree from a highly regarded source there will be no problems.
Long Distance Learning Programs
For many of us, the only hope for getting ahead in this world may require us to rely on the skills that a college degree can offer. The majority of these long distance learning programmes are the only way many people will be able to get any type of a college education. The advantages of distance learning courses will help anyone work on earning the degree of their choice. Take advantage of these distance degree learning programs as soon as you can. You will not be sorry.
